Dave Baranek (callsign "Bio") was one of 451 young men to receive his Wings of Gold in 1980 as a naval flight officer. Four years later, seasoned by intense training and deployments in the tense confrontations of the cold war, he became the only one of that initial group to rise to become an instructor at the navy's elite Fighter Weapons School. As a Topgun instructor, Bio was responsible for teaching the best fighter pilots of the Navy and Marine Corps how to be even better. He schooled them in the classroom and then went head-to-head with them in the skies.

Then, in August 1985, Bio was assigned to combine his day-to-day flight duties with participation in a Pentagon-blessed project to film action footage for a major Hollywood movie focusing on the lives, loves, heartbreaks, and triumphs of young fighter pilots Top Gun.

Bio soon found himself riding in limousines to attend gala premieres, and being singled out by giggling teenagers and awed schoolboys who recognized the name "Topgun" on his T-shirts. The book ends with his reflections on his career as a skilled naval aviator and his enduring love of flight.

The paperback and editions include more than fifty rare full color photographs of fighter jets in action.

"Author, Dave “Bio” Baranek does a phenomenal job of placing you IN the cockpit of his U.S. Navy F-14 Tomcat while telling his astounding story in his book, “Topgun Days” --a technical but totally accurate account of his flying days as an F-14 Radar Intercept Officer – aka RIO. This book is a real page turner as you quickly find yourself immersed in intense air-to-air combat that is second to none. You’ll feel like you’re strapped in his ejection seat as you ride it up the rails “with him” before splashing into the ocean after one swing in his parachute following a dreadful carrier landing mishap. He’ll have your heart racing (just like mine) as you wait to read what happens next. He highlights his life as a Topgun student then Topgun instructor followed by intricate details of how the blockbuster movie, “Top Gun” was made during his days as a Topgun instructor at Miramar. Bio reveals minute “Top Gun” movie details that I’ve never read or heard before. I couldn’t put the book down. The book is an interesting read and will make you feel excited inside, just like you felt the first time you saw the opening credit scenes of “Top Gun” as Tomcats roar off the carrier accompanied “Danger Zone” sung by Kenny Loggins. This book is a must read for all military veterans. Order your copy today!

  • Not great literature, but "Bio" really captures the feel and the environment of F-14 carrier aviation and all the related training, flying and associated social life of young Navy officers and especially the aviators. Having served on Constellation before, during and after her overhaul which converted her to shift from flying/supporting F-4 Phantoms to the F-14 Tomcats, Bio's tale brought back many memories of seeing both type of fighters fly from her decks. Although not a flyer, I provided all the aviation supply support during my tour on Connie, so I feel quite close to those "crazy" friends and colleagues who flew from carrier decks. Now I'm going to watch Top Gun again!
  • A great read from the ground up to 25,000ft doing head on passes between F-14s, F-5s and A-4s during the Top Gun film shoot. Dave puts us in the cockpit of the Tomcat, F-5s during filming. He also gives a great tale of his journey from NFO candidate to being a RIO in VF-24, surviving an ejection, followed by the challenges of going through Topgun as a student up to being selected as a instructor. The absolute best ACM flying in the world to the detailed briefings being a Topgun instructor is probably the pinnacle of a Naval aviators career. If you’re a Tomcat fan, a Top Gun fan this is a must.
  • Being a retired naval officer who once aspired to become a naval aviator, I found the book illuminating and fun to read. Deficient color vision kept me from my dream to be a pilot or other air crew, but I will always enjoy reading and discussing books like this one since that is about as close as I will ever get to fulfilling my childhood dream. If you liked the movie, you will enjoy Baranek's firsthand experiences building up to and including the making of the movie, which is about to get a sequel this fall!
  • If you want to know every detail of being a Top Gun pilot this is the book for you. Dave "Bio" Baranek describes in detail what it is like to be a rear seat radar officer in an F14 and other planes. But rather than just describe life as a pilot he also backs it up with a crash that is downplayed as both pilots survive when the ending could have been much different, his experience as a Top Gun student and instructor and also what it was like during the filming of Top Gun the movie on which he had significant technical and flying involvement. The book specializes in highlighting the redundancy that is required for safety. And probably its highest point is describing in detail the technical nature of the task of a Top Gun instructor and student. But this book is not for everyone and frankly, I'm not sure I would have kept reading if one of his fellow instructors wasn't also a close friend of mine. That's not meant as a negative. I read for entertainment. This book is about detail and those really wanting to know about flying high performance planes for the Navy and it does an exceptional job of this. Just make sure you are ready for a technical book of mundane tasks involved like passing your "murder boards" to be able to instruct your first class and the time necessary to write an upgrade of a class.

These guys are real heroes and incredibly talented and this book demonstrates the talent and commitment necessary to be a top pilot. But it doesn't read as a fast action book but rather a summation of the job of the pilot/instructor.
  • I talked this book over with a friend who was an NFO on a carrier on station off ‘Nam during the war and learned a lot about Naval Aviation in the process adding to the lessons in this book. My respect for the carrier crews who play such an incredible part in the performance of their mission has only increased as a result of reading this book. Worth every penny of the price and then some!
